Here's a quick clarification that should ease your mind. The interaction on file is about oral medications, since guar gum's gel can grab onto pills in your gut and slow how well they're absorbed. Pentostatin (Nipent) isn't a pill though. It's given as an injection into a vein by your cancer care team, so guar gum in your stomach can't really interfere with how it gets into your body.

Because of that, this particular absorption issue doesn't apply here. Still, since pentostatin is a serious chemotherapy drug, it's always smart to run any supplement, including a concentrated fiber like guar gum, past your oncologist or pharmacist before adding it.

What Is Pentostatin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Nipent

Nipent (pentostatin injection) is used to treat hairy cell leukemia, a rare cancer of the blood and bone marrow. It is approved for patients who have not yet received treatment as well as those whose disease did not respond to alpha-interferon therapy.

Nipent is used when the disease is active — meaning it is causing significant drops in red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets, or is producing disease-related symptoms.
