Ribavirin falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with ribavirin and xanthan gum. Because xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a gel in your stomach, it can slow down how fast your gut empties. The concern is that this gel might slow or slightly reduce how much of your ribavirin gets absorbed when you take them at the same time. Keep in mind this is only a theoretical worry based on how fiber behaves, not something proven in studies, and it's rated minor.

For hepatitis C treatment, you want full, steady absorption of ribavirin so it does its job. A simple fix is timing: take your ribavirin first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before any xanthan gum. Small food amounts are unlikely to matter, but check with your pharmacist before using concentrated fiber doses.

Xanthan gum is a fermentation-made fiber widely used to thicken and stabilize foods and to thicken liquids for people with swallowing difficulties. It is generally recognized as safe in the small amounts found in food, but large doses can cause gas, bloating, and loose stools. About Ribavirin

What Is Ribavirin Used For?

Brand names: Rebetol, Copegus, Ribasphere, Moderiba

Ribavirin comes in different forms for different uses. Ribavirin capsules are used in combination with interferon alfa-2b (pegylated or non-pegylated) to treat chronic hepatitis C (CHC) in patients 3 years and older with compensated liver disease. Ribavirin tablets are used in combination with PEGASYS® (peginterferon alfa-2a) to treat chronic hepatitis C in patients 5 years and older with compensated liver disease who have not previously been treated with interferon — including adults who also have HIV. Ribavirin for inhalation solution is a separate product used to treat hospitalized infants and young children with severe lower respiratory tract infections caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Ribavirin must never be used alone to treat hepatitis C — it only works as part of combination therapy. Only the most severe RSV infections requiring hospitalization should be treated with the inhaled form; mild RSV illness in children does not require this treatment.
