Here's the simple version: guar gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a thick gel in your stomach. That gel can grab onto pills and slow or reduce how much of them your body soaks up. Ribavirin is an oral antiviral you take by mouth, so it falls into this same boat. If guar gum cuts how much ribavirin you absorb, you could end up with lower drug levels, and that matters because keeping enough ribavirin in your system is key to fighting hepatitis C.

The good news is this is easy to manage. The usual advice is to take your ribavirin first and wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your guar gum. Food amounts of fiber are unlikely to be a problem, but concentrated supplements are worth spacing out. Please run the timing by your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Guar gum is a soluble, gel-forming fiber from the guar bean that may modestly help with cholesterol, blood sugar, and bowel regularity. It is generally safe in food amounts, but concentrated supplements can cause gas, bloating, and a risk of throat or gut blockage if not taken with enough water. Always take it with plenty of fluid and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Ribavirin

What Is Ribavirin Used For?

Brand names: Rebetol, Copegus, Ribasphere, Moderiba

Ribavirin comes in different forms for different uses. Ribavirin capsules are used in combination with interferon alfa-2b (pegylated or non-pegylated) to treat chronic hepatitis C (CHC) in patients 3 years and older with compensated liver disease. Ribavirin tablets are used in combination with PEGASYS® (peginterferon alfa-2a) to treat chronic hepatitis C in patients 5 years and older with compensated liver disease who have not previously been treated with interferon — including adults who also have HIV. Ribavirin for inhalation solution is a separate product used to treat hospitalized infants and young children with severe lower respiratory tract infections caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Ribavirin must never be used alone to treat hepatitis C — it only works as part of combination therapy. Only the most severe RSV infections requiring hospitalization should be treated with the inhaled form; mild RSV illness in children does not require this treatment.
