Here's the gist with ritonavir (Norvir) and xanthan gum. Because xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a gel in your gut, it can slow how fast your stomach empties. In theory, that gel could grab onto a pill and change how quickly your body soaks up the medicine. This is a theoretical concern only, based on how fiber behaves, not on real cases with ritonavir.

Ritonavir is not a prodrug, so the worry would be slightly slower or reduced absorption, which matters since steady drug levels keep HIV under control. To stay safe, keep food-level amounts of xanthan gum reasonable, and separate concentrated fiber supplements by taking them 30 to 60 minutes after your ritonavir dose. Check with your pharmacist before starting any fiber product.

What Is Ritonavir Used For?

Brand name: Norvir

Ritonavir (brand name Norvir) is used together with other HIV medicines to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and children older than one month of age. It is always taken as part of a combination regimen — never on its own.

Norvir oral powder is specifically indicated for pediatric patients with HIV-1 infection. Norvir tablets and oral solution are indicated for both adults and pediatric patients with HIV-1 infection. Ritonavir tablets (generic) are also indicated for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in combination with other antiretroviral agents.
