Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: L-Tryptophan, an amino acid your body uses to make serotonin and other compounds that affect mood, sleep, and pain perception. The powder form allows you to measure your own dose.

There are no inactive ingredients (fillers or binders) in this product.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient L-tryptophan product and its label doesn't state a use — see L-tryptophan's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence we hold shows L-Tryptophan is possibly ineffective for depression. For anxiety, athletic performance, teeth grinding (bruxism), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder, the scientific evidence isn't strong enough to establish whether it works or not.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

L-Tryptophan is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. The most common side effects are mild and include belching, diarrhea, drowsiness, dry mouth, gas, headache, heartburn, lightheadedness, nausea, stomach pain, blurred vision, and vomiting.

Rarely, L-Tryptophan has been linked to eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS), a serious neurological disorder with skin changes, hair loss, and rash—but almost all documented cases came from contaminated product made by one Japanese manufacturer in the late 1980s and were recalled in 1990. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding due to insufficient information to know it's safe.

Major identified

At least one ingredient has a documented Major-severity interaction. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — L-tryptophan.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Major.
  • For scale: 394 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check any CNS depressants you take—sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, and opioid pain relievers—since L-Tryptophan can add to drowsiness and sedation (Major severity). Also double-check serotonergic drugs: antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclics), migraine medications like triptans, and pain relievers like tramadol, because combining them with L-Tryptophan may raise the risk of serotonin syndrome or blood-vessel constriction (Moderate severity).

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

L-Tryptophan may be worth considering if you're interested in mood or sleep support and have no interactions with your current medications. However, if you take any CNS depressants (sleep aids, sedatives, opioids) or serotonergic drugs (antidepressants, certain migraine or pain meds), you need to check with your pharmacist first.

Avoid this supplement during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
