What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-Tryptophan, an amino acid your body uses to make serotonin and other compounds that affect mood, sleep, and pain perception. The powder form allows you to measure your own dose.
There are no inactive ingredients (fillers or binders) in this product.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold shows L-Tryptophan is possibly ineffective for depression. For anxiety, athletic performance, teeth grinding (bruxism), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder, the scientific evidence isn't strong enough to establish whether it works or not.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Tryptophan is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. The most common side effects are mild and include belching, diarrhea, drowsiness, dry mouth, gas, headache, heartburn, lightheadedness, nausea, stomach pain, blurred vision, and vomiting.
Rarely, L-Tryptophan has been linked to eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS), a serious neurological disorder with skin changes, hair loss, and rash—but almost all documented cases came from contaminated product made by one Japanese manufacturer in the late 1980s and were recalled in 1990. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding due to insufficient information to know it's safe.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Check any CNS depressants you take—sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, and opioid pain relievers—since L-Tryptophan can add to drowsiness and sedation (Major severity). Also double-check serotonergic drugs: antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclics), migraine medications like triptans, and pain relievers like tramadol, because combining them with L-Tryptophan may raise the risk of serotonin syndrome or blood-vessel constriction (Moderate severity).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Tryptophan may be worth considering if you're interested in mood or sleep support and have no interactions with your current medications. However, if you take any CNS depressants (sleep aids, sedatives, opioids) or serotonergic drugs (antidepressants, certain migraine or pain meds), you need to check with your pharmacist first.
Avoid this supplement during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

100% Pure L-Tryptophan by NutraBio Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
NutraBio's 100% Pure L-Tryptophan has documented interactions with medications in two important drug categories.
The most serious concern is with CNS depressants—drugs that slow down your central nervous system, like sedatives, sleep aids, and opioids. L-Tryptophan can cause fatigue and drowsiness on its own, and combining it with these medications might add to that effect.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The second category is serotonergic drugs—antidepressants like SSRIs, SNRIs, and certain pain or migraine medications that work on serotonin. L-Tryptophan is a building block your body uses to make serotonin, so theoretically pairing it with these drugs could amplify serotonin effects and raise the risk of serotonin syndrome (agitation, rapid heartbeat, muscle rigidity, high fever) or cerebral blood-vessel constriction (a narrowing that can cause serious headache or stroke-like symptoms).
Altogether, these interactions span 394 individual medications. Before you start this supplement, run your exact prescriptions through the medication checker on this page.
