Alosetron falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group L-tryptophan interacts with.

Theoretically, combining L-tryptophan with serotonergic drugs might cause additive serotonergic effects.
L-tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with L-tryptophan might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders.

Here's the wrinkle with this pairing. Alosetron actually works on the serotonin system, but in a different way than you might expect. It blocks certain serotonin receptors (called 5-HT3 receptors) in your gut to slow things down and ease IBS-related diarrhea. L-tryptophan goes the other direction, since your body uses it to make more serotonin.

On paper, stacking extra serotonin activity on top of a serotonin-related drug raises a theoretical worry about too much serotonin, sometimes called serotonin syndrome (think agitation, fast heartbeat, sweating, shakiness). I want to be honest though: this concern is based on pharmacology, not real-world reports, so it's a low likelihood situation. Still, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Alosetron

What Is Alosetron Used For?

Brand name: Lotronex

Alosetron tablets — available as Alosetron, Alosetron Hydrochloride, and Lotronex — are approved only for women with severe diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) whose symptoms have lasted 6 months or longer and who have not gotten adequate relief from conventional therapy. Other causes of GI symptoms must be ruled out first.

To qualify as severe, diarrhea-predominant IBS must include diarrhea plus at least one of the following: frequent and severe abdominal pain or discomfort, frequent bowel urgency or fecal incontinence (accidental stool leakage), or significant disruption to daily activities. Clinical studies have not confirmed the same benefit in men.
