Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
SEROTONERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Dextromethorphan HBr
Dextromethorphan HBr falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group L-tryptophan interacts with.
L-tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with L-tryptophan might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing with this combo: dextromethorphan, the cough suppressant in products like Vicks Formula 44, does more than quiet a cough. It also nudges your serotonin levels up a bit. L-tryptophan does something similar from a different angle, since your body turns it into serotonin. Stack the two together and you're adding serotonin from two directions at once.
In rare cases, too much serotonin can lead to what we call serotonin syndrome, with symptoms like agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, or muscle twitching. I'll be honest, this warning is theoretical and based on how these substances work, not solid real-world reports, so don't panic. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist before pairing them, especially at higher doses.
