L-tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with L-tryptophan might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pairing. Nortriptyline (Pamelor) is a tricyclic antidepressant that boosts serotonin activity in your brain. L-tryptophan is a building block your body turns into serotonin. So when you put the two together, you're essentially pushing serotonin from two directions at once, and that extra load is what raises the concern.

In rare cases, too much serotonin can lead to what we call serotonin syndrome, with symptoms like agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shakiness, muscle twitching, or confusion. I'll be honest with you: this risk is mostly theoretical, based on how these substances work rather than lots of reported cases. Still, before you add tryptophan, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first so they can weigh it for your situation.
