Alosetron falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group 5-htp interacts with.

Combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might cause additive serotonergic effects.
5-HTP can increase serotonin levels and cause serotonergic effects. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. However, serotonin syndrome with 5-HTP has not yet been reported in humans. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using 5-HTP with serotonergic drugs.

Here's the thing to know about alosetron (Lotronex): it actually blocks one type of serotonin receptor in your gut, which is how it calms down the diarrhea and cramping of IBS. Even so, the concern flagged here isn't really about your gut. It's about raising serotonin levels throughout the body, and 5-HTP can do exactly that because your body turns it straight into serotonin.

This pairing is only a theoretical caution based on how these substances work, not on real reported cases, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, if you ever notice agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, or muscle twitching, those can be signs of too much serotonin, and you'd want to stop and get help. Please run this combo by your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them.

About Alosetron

What Is Alosetron Used For?

Brand name: Lotronex

Alosetron tablets — available as Alosetron, Alosetron Hydrochloride, and Lotronex — are approved only for women with severe diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) whose symptoms have lasted 6 months or longer and who have not gotten adequate relief from conventional therapy. Other causes of GI symptoms must be ruled out first.

To qualify as severe, diarrhea-predominant IBS must include diarrhea plus at least one of the following: frequent and severe abdominal pain or discomfort, frequent bowel urgency or fecal incontinence (accidental stool leakage), or significant disruption to daily activities. Clinical studies have not confirmed the same benefit in men.
