5-htp and Aripiprazole Lauroxil

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

5-htp interacts with whole categories of medication. Aripiprazole Lauroxil falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with 5-htp in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Aripiprazole Lauroxil

Aripiprazole Lauroxil falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group 5-htp interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of 5-HTP with medications that cause sedation might have additive effects.
In clinical trials, 5-HTP has been associated with drowsiness and somnolence.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Aristada (the long-acting aripiprazole injection you get in the clinic) can make some people feel drowsy or tired. 5-HTP has also been linked to drowsiness in studies because it boosts serotonin. Put them together and you could feel sleepier or more groggy than usual, with possible dizziness or trouble focusing.

I'll be honest with you, this is a theoretical concern based on how each one acts, not a strong proven reaction. The amounts matter too, and everyone responds differently. Since aripiprazole stays in your system for weeks after each shot, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding 5-HTP, just so you can watch how you feel and stay safe.

SEROTONERGIC DRUGS

2 of 2

Aripiprazole Lauroxil also falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS.

Combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might cause additive serotonergic effects.
5-HTP can increase serotonin levels and cause serotonergic effects. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. However, serotonin syndrome with 5-HTP has not yet been reported in humans. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using 5-HTP with serotonergic drugs.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind: Aristada (aripiprazole lauroxil) is a long-acting injectable antipsychotic that gently nudges your brain's serotonin and dopamine activity. Since 5-HTP raises serotonin levels, taking the two together could stack up extra serotonin and, in theory, raise the chance of serotonin-related side effects. Watch for things like agitation, restlessness, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, tremor, or confusion.

I want to be honest about how strong this concern is. This is a theoretical interaction based on how these substances work, not on real-world reports, and serotonin syndrome from 5-HTP hasn't actually been documented in people. So don't panic. But because your aripiprazole is a long-acting shot you can't easily "undo," please run any 5-HTP plans by your pharmacist or prescriber first.
