Here's the gist with metoclopramide (Reglan) and 5-HTP. Both can leave you feeling drowsy on their own. Metoclopramide is known to cause sleepiness, fatigue, and sometimes a foggy, slowed-down feeling, and 5-HTP has been linked to drowsiness too. Put them together and those tired effects could simply stack up, so you might feel more sluggish or sleepy than you'd expect.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern based on how both act, not something proven by strong studies, so don't panic. Still, it's worth being careful with driving or anything that needs you sharp until you know how you feel. Before adding 5-HTP, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might cause additive serotonergic effects.
5-HTP can increase serotonin levels and cause serotonergic effects. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. However, serotonin syndrome with 5-HTP has not yet been reported in humans. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using 5-HTP with serotonergic drugs.

Here's the thing to know about pairing 5-HTP with metoclopramide (Reglan): both nudge serotonin activity in your body. 5-HTP gives your body more raw material to make serotonin, and metoclopramide has some serotonin-related effects of its own. Stacking them could, in theory, push serotonin too high.

When serotonin climbs too far, you can get what's called serotonin syndrome, with signs like agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, muscle twitching, or confusion. To be fair, this concern is theoretical, based on how these compounds work rather than reported cases, so I don't want to scare you. Still, since metoclopramide already carries its own neurological cautions, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

About Metoclopramide

What Is Metoclopramide Used For?

Brand names: Reglan, Metoclopramide Injection, Octamide

Metoclopramide tablets are used in adults for two main conditions. First, they treat symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux (GERD — when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus) in people who haven't gotten relief from standard treatments. Second, they ease symptoms of diabetic gastroparesis, a condition where nerve damage from diabetes causes the stomach to empty too slowly.

Treatment is meant to be short-term. For acid reflux, it's used for 4 to 12 weeks. For diabetic gastroparesis, it's generally used for 2 to 8 weeks. It is not recommended for children due to serious safety concerns.
