Selegiline falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group 5-htp interacts with.

Combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might cause additive serotonergic effects.
5-HTP can increase serotonin levels and cause serotonergic effects. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. However, serotonin syndrome with 5-HTP has not yet been reported in humans. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using 5-HTP with serotonergic drugs.

Here's the key thing about Selegiline: it's an MAO-B inhibitor, which means it slows down the breakdown of certain brain chemicals. 5-HTP, on the other hand, is a raw ingredient your body turns into serotonin. So when you put the two together, you can end up with more serotonin floating around and less of it being cleared away. That's an additive effect that could, in theory, push serotonin too high.

The worry here is something called serotonin syndrome, which can cause agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, muscle twitching, or confusion. To be fair, this is mostly a theoretical concern based on how these substances work, and it hasn't been clearly reported in people. Still, since it's a real possibility, please check with your doctor or pharmacist before pairing 5-HTP with Selegiline.

Selegiline is used as an add-on treatment for people with Parkinson's disease who are already taking levodopa/carbidopa but are finding that the medication's effects are wearing off or becoming less reliable. It is not used alone — it only works as part of a combination approach.

In clinical studies, adding selegiline helped reduce the amount of daily levodopa needed, cut down on "off" time (periods when symptoms break through), and improved things like tremor, speech, movement, and overall daily function.
