Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pairing: diphenhydramine (Benadryl) is already a sedating antihistamine, and one of its biggest effects is making you drowsy. 5-HTP has also been linked to sleepiness in studies. So when you put the two together, the worry is simply additive drowsiness. You might feel groggier, more foggy-headed, or slower to wake up than you'd expect from either one alone.

I'll be honest, this concern is theoretical, based on how each one behaves rather than strong head-to-head studies. It's not a dangerous chemical clash, but it could leave you extra sleepy, which matters if you're driving or need to stay sharp. Diphenhydramine temporarily relieves symptoms of hay fever, other upper respiratory allergies, and the common cold — including runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat.

After Bite Xtra gel is formulated for topical use and is approved to temporarily relieve pain and itching from minor burns, minor cuts and scrapes, insect bites, minor skin irritations, and rashes from poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac.
