California Poppy Drug Interactions: The Bottom Line

From the HelloPharmacist Editorial Team · Updated July 2026

Based on the available evidence, the overall risk of a clinically significant California Poppy drug interaction appears low for most people, though anyone taking sedating medicines should be aware of one theoretical concern. None of the listed interactions are rated major, and every one of them traces back to a single concern about added drowsiness that comes from laboratory research rather than studies in people.

Interactions deserving the most attention

The one group that stands out is CNS depressants, meaning medicines that cause drowsiness, such as sedatives, sleep aids, and similar drugs. Lab research shows California poppy itself has calming, sedative effects, so in theory it could add to the drowsiness these medicines cause. This has not been confirmed in human studies, but extra sedation can matter for alertness and safety, so it is the most sensible thing to watch for.

What the rest of the list means

Although the number of listed medications is large, it does not mean each combination has been shown to cause harm. Nearly all of these entries reflect that single theoretical sedation concern applied across the many drugs with drowsy side effects. No well-documented human interactions have been reported with this plant.

What Severity, Likelihood & Evidence Mean

Severity — How Serious It Can Be

  • Major. Clinically significant; generally best avoided, or used only under direct professional supervision.
  • Moderate. May need monitoring, a dose adjustment, or separating the times you take each one.
  • Minor. Generally not clinically significant, but still worth noting and mentioning to your pharmacist.
  • No known interaction. Checked against our sources with nothing documented — not the same as proven safety.

Likelihood — How Well It’s Documented

  • Likely. Well-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction
  • Probable. Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • Possible. Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists
  • Unlikely. Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

Where This Data Comes From

  • Interaction records are evidence-graded and sourced from the Natural Medicines database (TRC Healthcare), the same reference used by pharmacists and hospitals.

California Poppy: Uses, Safety & Side Effects

The bottom line

California poppy is a traditional herbal remedy used mainly for anxiety and sleep problems, often combined with other calming herbs. Human research is very limited, so its true benefits are not well proven. It is generally considered mild, but should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding and used with caution by anyone taking sedating medicines.

Overview

California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) is a flowering plant in the poppy family (Papaveraceae). It is famous for its bright orange-gold flowers and is the official state flower of California. It grows widely across the western United States and other warm, dry regions.

Native peoples of North America traditionally used the plant for pain, sleep, and calming purposes. Today it is sold as a tea, tincture, liquid extract, or capsule, often blended with other calming herbs such as valerian or passionflower. Despite its name and family, California poppy is not the same plant that produces opium, and it is not used to make narcotics.

How it works

California poppy contains plant compounds called alkaloids, including californidine, eschscholtzine, and small amounts of others. Laboratory and animal research suggests these compounds may affect chemical messengers in the brain, possibly interacting with calming (GABA) pathways and with receptors involved in mood and sleep.

These proposed mechanisms may help explain its traditional calming and sleep-promoting reputation. However, most of this work is from test tubes and animals, so we cannot be sure the same effects happen in people at the doses commonly used.

Safety & precautions

For short-term use in adults, California poppy is generally regarded as mild, but high-quality human safety data are lacking. Because it may have a sedating or relaxing effect, avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: There is not enough reliable information to consider it safe, so it is best to avoid it during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Children: While it has been used traditionally for bedwetting, parents should not give it to a child without first talking to a pediatrician or pharmacist. People with low blood pressure, those scheduled for surgery, or anyone taking medicines that cause drowsiness should be cautious and check with a healthcare professional first.

Side effects

Reported side effects are usually mild and may include drowsiness or sleepiness, especially at higher amounts. Because it may relax the body, some people could notice mild dizziness.

Allergic reactions are possible with any plant product. Stop using it and seek medical care if you develop a rash, swelling, or trouble breathing. Because well-controlled human studies are limited, the full range of possible side effects is not fully known.

Dosing

There is no official, standardized dose for California poppy. Products vary widely in strength, and it is often part of herbal blends. The best approach is to follow the directions on the product label and not exceed the recommended amount.

It is commonly taken in the evening when used for sleep, but timing and amount should be guided by the product and your own response. Talk with a pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you take other medicines or have a health condition.
