Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: diphenhydramine (Benadryl) is already a sedating antihistamine, so it tends to make you drowsy on its own. California poppy is an herb that lab and animal studies suggest may also have a calming, sleepy effect. Put the two together and the worry is that the drowsiness could stack up, leaving you more groggy than you bargained for.

In real terms, that might mean stronger sleepiness, foggy thinking, dizziness, or feeling slow the next morning. I'll be honest with you though, this concern comes from laboratory research, not human studies, so it's more theoretical than proven. Still, since both can sedate you, I'd avoid driving or anything risky until you know how you feel, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Diphenhydramine page

“Diphenhydramine (Benadryl, Simply Sleep) is sedating by design, and most of the 147 supplements and herbal ingredients on this list lean into that. Seventy-eight are sedating substances themselves, alcohol and kava the standouts, and stacking them can slow breathing and reflexes well beyond ordinary drowsiness.”
