Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Fentanyl
Fentanyl falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group California Poppy interacts with.
Laboratory research shows that California poppy has sedative effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: California poppy seems to have a calming, sleep-promoting effect of its own. Fentanyl is a powerful opioid that already slows down the brain and nervous system in a big way. Put the two together, and those calming effects can stack on top of each other. That could mean more drowsiness, deeper sedation, slower breathing, dizziness, or feeling very foggy. With a strong opioid like fentanyl, that's worth taking seriously.
Now, the honest part: this concern comes mostly from lab and animal research, not solid human studies, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Fentanyl isn't a prodrug, so this isn't about how it's broken down, it's simply two sedating things adding up. Please don't change anything on your own. Just check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Fentanyl page
“There is very little room for error with fentanyl (Duragesic, Sublimaze, Actiq, and other forms), a powerful opioid where a modest rise in blood level or an extra layer of sedation can become dangerous, so this interaction list deserves real respect. Most of the risk falls into two patterns.”
