Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: California poppy is a calming herb, and topiramate (Topamax and similar brands) already tends to slow the brain a bit. Topiramate can make people feel drowsy, foggy, dizzy, or tired, and it can slow your thinking or reaction time. Stacking a sedating herb on top could add to those effects, so you might feel sleepier or more sluggish than usual.

I want to be honest about the evidence though. This concern comes only from lab and animal studies, not real-world human cases, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, before you combine the two, run it past your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you drive or notice you're already a bit foggy on topiramate.
