Theoretically, concomitant use of 5-HTP with medications that cause sedation might have additive effects.
In clinical trials, 5-HTP has been associated with drowsiness and somnolence.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: morphine already makes a lot of people feel drowsy, foggy, or very relaxed. 5-HTP can also cause drowsiness and sleepiness on its own. Put the two together and you may feel that sedating effect stacked up, so you could end up more tired or mentally slowed than usual.

I want to be honest about how solid this is. This warning is theoretical, based on how each substance behaves rather than strong studies of the pair. It isn't about 5-HTP changing how your body breaks morphine down. Still, with a strong opioid, the safe move is to talk with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and watch for extra drowsiness, dizziness, or slowed breathing, especially when you first start.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Morphine Sulfate page

“With morphine sulfate (MS Contin, Kadian, Avinza), an opioid powerful enough to slow breathing on its own, this list warrants genuine respect. Of the 172 supplements and foods on file, 8 carry a major rating, and most of those pile extra sedation onto a drug that already sedates.”

  • Low mood or depression
  • Anxiety and stress

  • Appetite or weight management

5-HTP is a compound your body uses to make serotonin, and people take it as a supplement hoping to improve mood, sleep, and headaches. Some early research is promising, but the overall evidence is limited and not conclusive. Because it can affect serotonin and may interact with medicines, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

About Morphine

What Is Morphine Used For?

Brand names: MS Contin, Kadian, Avinza, Morphabond, Arymo ER

Morphine is used to manage acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) pain that is severe enough to need an opioid and that hasn't been adequately treated by other options. The higher-concentration liquid form is reserved for adults who are already opioid-tolerant — meaning their body is used to opioid medications.

Because of real risks of addiction, misuse, and overdose, morphine is only prescribed when other pain treatments have not worked or are not expected to work. It is not intended for long-term use unless the pain continues to be severe and no alternatives are suitable.
