5-htp + Warfarin
Warfarin brand name: Warfarin.
We found no known interaction between 5-htp and Warfarin in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.
5-htp and Warfarin
We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.
No Known Interaction Found
We did not find a documented interaction between Warfarin and 5-htp in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.
If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.
Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.
Why No Interaction Is Listed for Warfarin
Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Warfarin is filed under 10 classifications — including cytochrome p450 2c8 (cyp2c8) substrates, cytochrome p450 2c19 (cyp2c19) substrates, cytochrome p450 2c9 (cyp2c9) substrates. 5-htp has documented interactions with 3 drug classes — the most serious being carbidopa (lodosyn) (moderate), cns depressants (moderate) and serotonergic drugs (moderate) — and none of Warfarin’s classifications are among them.
Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.
5-htp Does Interact With Other Medications
5-htp has 398 moderate known drug interactions in our database — Warfarin isn’t one of them. If you take anything else, check it against the full list below.

Questions About 5-htp or Warfarin
These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. Each one covers 5-htp or Warfarin, not necessarily both, but if one is close to what you were about to ask it will usually go further than a database entry can:

This page covers 5-htp only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Warfarin page lists 361 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Warfarin page
“People take warfarin to prevent dangerous clots, and many are the same people reaching for glucosamine for sore joints or a multivitamin containing vitamin K, which makes this a list that deserves genuine respect. Of the 361 supplements on file for warfarin, 16 carry a major rating, and the danger runs in both directions: some add to w…”

Where does our data come from?
- Source: the Natural Medicines (TRC Healthcare) clinical database — the evidence-graded professional reference for herb & supplement interactions.
- Citation library: 103,510 references behind our interaction content, 65,311 of them resolved to verified PubMed/DOI sources. See every 5-htp reference on this page ↓
- Freshness: we automatically re-check this combination every week — this pair was last verified September 13, 2026. The 5-htp and Warfarin records this page draws on were last updated July 10, 2026.
- What “no known interaction” means: no documented interaction in the sources above — not a guarantee of safety. Supplements are studied far less than prescription drugs, so we say exactly what the evidence supports, and nothing more.
About 5-htp
What is 5-htp?
- Low mood or depression
- Anxiety and stress
- Sleep problems
- Migraine headaches
- Fibromyalgia
- Appetite or weight management
5-HTP is a compound your body uses to make serotonin, and people take it as a supplement hoping to improve mood, sleep, and headaches. Some early research is promising, but the overall evidence is limited and not conclusive. Because it can affect serotonin and may interact with medicines, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.
Seeds (Griffonia simplicifolia) used as the natural source; the supplement is the purified amino acid · Capsules, tablets, time-release tablets
An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether 5-htp is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our 5-htp record says about it on its own.
5-htp: dosing
There is no official, standardized dose of 5-HTP that has been firmly established for any condition. Products vary widely in strength and form, including some time-release versions. The safest approach is to follow the directions on the product label and to start low. If you do not notice a benefit or you have side effects, stop and talk to a healthcare professional.

About Warfarin
What Is Warfarin Used For?
Brand name: Warfarin
Warfarin sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets are both used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs). They are also used to prevent clot-related complications in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) or who have had a heart valve replaced.
In people who have had a heart attack, warfarin is used to reduce the risk of death, another heart attack, stroke, or other clotting events. It does not dissolve an existing clot, but it helps prevent the clot from growing and stops new dangerous clots from forming.
