Here's the simple version: Diazepam (Valium) already calms the brain and tends to make people drowsy, relaxed, and a little foggy. 5-HTP can do its own mild sedating thing too, since some studies noticed it caused drowsiness. Stack the two together and those calming effects may pile up, leaving you sleepier, more lightheaded, slower to react, or harder to wake than you expected.

I'll be honest with you, this concern is mostly theoretical, based on how both act rather than hard proof from studies. Still, it's worth respecting, especially if you drive or you're older. Please don't start or stop either one on your own. Just loop in your pharmacist or doctor first so they can give you the okay.

What Is Diazepam Used For?

Brand names: Valium, Valium injection, Diastat AcuDial, Valtoco

  • Diazepam is used to relieve anxiety and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. It is also used along with other medications to control muscle spasms and spasticity caused by certain neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy (condition that causes difficulty with movement and balance), paraplegia (inability to move parts of the body), athetosis (abnormal muscle contractions), and stiff-man syndrome (a rare disorder with muscle rigidity and stiffness). Diazepam is also used along with other medications to control seizures. Diazepam is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by calming abnormal overactivity in the brain.
