SEROTONERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Paroxetine
Paroxetine falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group 5-htp interacts with.
5-HTP can increase serotonin levels and cause serotonergic effects. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. However, serotonin syndrome with 5-HTP has not yet been reported in humans. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using 5-HTP with serotonergic drugs.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to know about pairing 5-HTP with paroxetine (Paxil): both push serotonin in the same direction. Paroxetine is an SSRI, which means it raises serotonin by keeping more of it active in your brain. 5-HTP is a raw material your body turns into serotonin. So stacking them could add up to too much serotonin activity.
In rare cases that can lead to something called serotonin syndrome, with signs like agitation, fast heartbeat, sweating, shivering, muscle twitching, or confusion. I'll be honest though: this concern is mostly theoretical based on how the two work, and serotonin syndrome from 5-HTP hasn't actually been reported in people. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them rather than guessing on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Paroxetine page
“I treat paroxetine (Paxil, Paxil CR, Brisdelle) as a medication where supplement choices genuinely matter, not one to wave through. This antidepressant raises serotonin, so about twenty of the ingredients listed here, lithium among them, can push serotonin too high and risk serotonin syndrome, a dangerous reaction.”

About 5-htp
What is 5-htp?
- Low mood or depression
- Anxiety and stress
- Sleep problems
- Migraine headaches
- Fibromyalgia
- Appetite or weight management
5-HTP is a compound your body uses to make serotonin, and people take it as a supplement hoping to improve mood, sleep, and headaches. Some early research is promising, but the overall evidence is limited and not conclusive. Because it can affect serotonin and may interact with medicines, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

Paroxetine Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Paroxetine as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with 5-htp — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
