Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: L-carnitine, an amino acid your body uses to transport fatty acids into cells for energy production. It's sometimes given intravenously in medical settings for L-carnitine deficiency and is also taken by mouth as a supplement.

The inactive ingredients are water, crystalline fructose, citric acid, natural and artificial flavor, potassium sorbate, and FD&C Yellow No. 5 (a food dye).

Insufficient evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Insufficient

There isn't enough reliable clinical evidence to rate this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: exercise performance and athletic performance.
  • We looked for evidence on: Athletic performance, Exercise-induced muscle damage, Exercise-induced muscle soreness, endurance, muscle recovery, workout capacity.
  • The closest evidence on file: L-carnitine is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Athletic performance (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: L-carnitine is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Exercise-induced muscle soreness, Exercise-induced muscle damage.

L-carnitine is effective for treating L-carnitine deficiency. It's rated possibly effective for high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), heart failure (congestive heart failure), and angina (chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart).

The evidence we hold doesn't establish effectiveness for other uses, so talk with your doctor about whether this supplement fits your particular goal.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

L-carnitine is generally well tolerated at typical doses. The most common side effects are stomach upset—abdominal cramps, pain, diarrhea, nausea, heartburn, and reduced appetite—and a fishy-smelling body odor.

High doses are more likely to cause these effects. Seizures have been reported rarely.

The safety data for breastfeeding is limited, so caution is advised if you're nursing. Pregnancy safety information isn't on file for this ingredient; talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

L-Carnitine3 drug types · 19 drugs

Acenocoumarol (Sintrom)

Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol.
L-carnitine might enhance the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, an oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin, but shorter-acting. There are at least two case reports of INR elevation with concomitant use. In one case, a 33-year-old male with a previously stable INR had an elevated INR of 4.65 after L-carnitine was started and continued for 10 weeks. INR normalized after discontinuation of the L-carnitine-containing product.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Thyroid Hormone

Theoretically, L-carnitine might decrease the effectiveness of thyroid hormone replacement.
L-carnitine appears to act as a peripheral thyroid hormone antagonist by inhibiting entry of thyroid hormone into the nucleus of cells. Taking L-carnitine also seems to diminish some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.

Likelihood Probable Evidence B
Warfarin (Coumadin)

Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin.
L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, a shorter-acting oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin. There is not enough information to know whether this interaction occurs with L-carnitine and warfarin.

100% Ultra-Pure Carnitine Liquid Orange by MuscleTech Essential Series: Common Questions

Does 100% Ultra-Pure Carnitine Liquid Orange by MuscleTech Essential Series interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, 100% Ultra-Pure Carnitine Liquid Orange has a known interaction with 19 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
100% Ultra-Pure Carnitine Liquid Orange contains 2 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What is L-carnitine, and what does it do in the body?
L-carnitine is an amino acid your body uses to move fatty acids into cells so they can be burned for energy. It's produced naturally in your body, especially in muscles, and can also be obtained from food and supplements.
What are the most common side effects?
Stomach upset is the main one—abdominal cramps, pain, diarrhea, nausea, heartburn, and reduced appetite. A fishy-smelling body odor has also been reported. These side effects are dose-related and usually mild at typical doses.
Is L-carnitine safe while breastfeeding?
The safety data while breastfeeding is limited, so caution is advised. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you.
Can this help with weight loss or muscle building?
The evidence we hold on file establishes effectiveness for L-carnitine deficiency and possible effectiveness for high cholesterol, heart failure, and angina. We don't have data on weight loss or muscle-building uses for this product, so ask your doctor or pharmacist whether it fits your goals.
Why does the label say 'Ultra-Pure' if there are inactive ingredients?
The 'Ultra-Pure' refers to the L-carnitine itself—the active ingredient. The inactive ingredients (water, citric acid, flavor, preservative, and dye) are standard excipients that make the liquid drinkable and stable; they're not considered part of the active ingredient's purity.
