What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking 4x6 Acidophilus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.

It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of 4x6 Acidophilus by NOW
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product is a blend of 6 probiotic bacteria — live microorganisms meant to support your gut health. The ones we have data for are Lactobacillus acidophilus (La-14), Bifidobacterium lactis (Bl-04), Bifidobacterium longum (Bl-05), Streptococcus thermophilus (St-21), Lactobacillus bulgaricus (Lb-87), and Lactobacillus paracasei (Lpc-37).
The inactive ingredients are microcrystalline cellulose, hypromellose, stearic acid, and silicon dioxide — standard capsule materials.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for Lactobacillus acidophilus itself is modest but encouraging — it's rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, Helicobacter pylori, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. For the other four bacteria in this blend, the evidence isn't well established in our data.
Most of them carry ratings of insufficient reliable evidence for the conditions they've been studied in, which means we just don't have enough solid research yet to say whether they work.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
These probiotics are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Since they contain live microorganisms, there is a small theoretical concern that they could cause serious infection in people with severely weakened immune systems or certain critical illnesses — cases of bacteremia and sepsis have been reported in preterm infants and critically ill patients.
In otherwise healthy people, the main side effects are gastrointestinal and uncommon: abdominal discomfort, bloating, flatulence, or diarrhea. Rash and itching have been reported in one trial, though it's unclear whether they were due to L. acidophilus or another factor.
Lactobacillus acidophilus is rated possibly safe in pregnancy. Data on the other ingredients during pregnancy and lactation are either limited or not on file — talk with your doctor or pharmacist before use if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check any antibiotic drugs you're taking before you start this product — Moderate interaction. The bacteria in this supplement may be killed off if you take antibiotics at the same time, so you'll want to separate them.
Bifidobacterium lactis and Lactobacillus paracasei couldn't be checked because we hold no interaction data for them.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This is a multi-strain probiotic that may help with certain gut and vaginal health issues, particularly if you're dealing with antibiotic-associated diarrhea. If you're in good health, it's generally well tolerated.
Be careful if you're taking antibiotics — space them apart from this supplement. If you're seriously ill, immunocompromised, pregnant, or breastfeeding, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

4x6 Acidophilus by NOW Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
NOW's 4x6 Acidophilus contains live probiotic bacteria, and one of the main concerns is its interaction with antibiotic drugs.
Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, and Lactobacillus bulgaricus (also called Lactobacillus delbrueckii) can all be affected by antibiotics — the drugs may kill a significant number of the live organisms in the supplement, reducing its effectiveness. This is a Moderate severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.
We could not check Bifidobacterium lactis or Lactobacillus paracasei for interactions because we hold no data on them. Streptococcus thermophilus, one of the checked ingredients, has no interactions documented in our data — though this is not a guarantee that none exist.
If you take antibiotics, the best approach is to separate when you take them from when you take this probiotic. Run your exact medications through the checker below before you start.

For each ingredient in 4x6 Acidophilus with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Lactobacillus acidophilus (La-14)
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Bifidobacterium longum (Bl-05)
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium longum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. longum.
Since B. longum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. longum preparations by at least 2 hours.
Lactobacillus bulgaricus (Lb-87)
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus delbrueckii with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. delbrueckii.
Lactobacillus delbrueckii preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. delbrueckii preparations by at least two hours.
