HelloPharmacist Scorecard of 5-HTP 50 mg by Neurobiologix
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), a compound your body naturally uses to make serotonin, a chemical messenger in the brain that influences mood, sleep, and appetite. The capsule also holds inactive ingredients — microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, water, L-leucine, and silicon dioxide — which are fillers and binders that hold the capsule together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for 5-HTP shows it is possibly effective for depression. For other conditions — Alzheimer's disease and panic disorder — the reliable evidence isn't there yet to rate it.
For Down syndrome, the data leans toward possibly ineffective. For cerebellar ataxia, we don't have enough reliable information to know either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Taken by mouth short-term, 5-HTP is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects are abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, drowsiness, fatigue, headache, dizziness, vomiting, anorexia (loss of appetite), and insomnia — these tend to be dose-dependent and may lessen with continued use.
Rare serious side effects include aggression, hallucinations, and mania. Gastrointestinal upset — nausea, vomiting, pain, heartburn, constipation, diarrhea — can occur at any dose and may relate to how fast you ramp up your dose.
During pregnancy, there isn't enough safety information; the data advises against use. The same applies to breastfeeding.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about your individual situation if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check any serotonergic drugs (antidepressants, certain migraine medicines) — a Moderate interaction. Also check CNS depressants like sedatives and sleep aids, and if you take carbidopa for Parkinson's, that's a Moderate interaction too.
Use the medication checker on this page for your full list.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
5-HTP may help if you're dealing with depression and want to work with your doctor on it. But this supplement interacts with serotonergic drugs, sedating medications, and carbidopa, so you'll need to check your prescriptions first.

5-HTP 50 mg by Neurobiologix Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Neurobiologix 5-HTP 50 mg contains a single active ingredient, L-5-Hydroxytryptophan, which does interact with medications.
The most serious concern involves serotonergic drugs — those that increase serotonin, like certain antidepressants and migraine medications. Combining them with 5-HTP is a Moderate interaction; it can theoretically increase serotonin levels too much and raise the risk of serotonin syndrome (confusion, rapid heart rate, muscle rigidity, fever) and other serotonergic side effects.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, some pain medications, alcohol) are also a Moderate interaction. 5-HTP itself causes drowsiness in trials, so taking it alongside medications that sedate you could add up and leave you overly drowsy or impaired.
Carbidopa (Lodosyn), a Parkinson's medication, is flagged as a Moderate interaction too. When combined with 5-HTP, it can heighten serotonergic side effects and may trigger restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, or even manic symptoms.
Altogether, these interactions span 398 individual medications. Before you start this product, run your exact medications through the checker below.

L-5-Hydroxytryptophan
Carbidopa (Lodosyn)
Combining 5-HTP and carbidopa can increase the risk of serotonergic side effects.
Carbidopa is sometimes used with 5-HTP to minimize peripheral 5-HTP metabolism and boost the amount that reaches the brain. However, this combination might also increase the risk of some side effects including hypomania, restlessness, rapid speech, anxiety, insomnia, and aggressiveness. Combining carbidopa and 5-HTP might also increase the risk of scleroderma-like skin changes due to elevated serotonin levels.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of 5-HTP with medications that cause sedation might have additive effects.
In clinical trials, 5-HTP has been associated with drowsiness and somnolence.
Serotonergic Drugs
Combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might cause additive serotonergic effects.
5-HTP can increase serotonin levels and cause serotonergic effects. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. However, serotonin syndrome with 5-HTP has not yet been reported in humans. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using 5-HTP with serotonergic drugs.
