HelloPharmacist Scorecard of 8 Billion Acidophilus & Bifidus by NOW
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains 3 active ingredients: two named probiotic bacteria strains (Bifidobacterium longum and Lactobacillus acidophilus), plus a blend of probiotic bacteria that includes Bifidobacterium animalis lactis. These are live microorganisms designed to support your gut flora.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients like microcrystalline cellulose, hypromellose, stearic acid, and silicon dioxide — these are standard binders and fillers that help hold the capsule together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for what this product can do is mixed and depends on the ingredient. Lactobacillus acidophilus shows possibly effective evidence for irritable bowel syndrome, Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
Bifidobacterium longum, on the other hand, has insufficient evidence for the conditions we checked — including cognitive decline, hay fever, antibiotic-related diarrhea, anxiety, asthma, and athletic performance. We don't hold effectiveness ratings for the other two ingredients in the blend.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Both Bifidobacterium longum and Lactobacillus acidophilus are generally well tolerated in healthy people. That said, caution is needed if you're seriously ill or have a weakened immune system — there are rare reports of these bacteria causing bloodstream infections (bacteremia) in critically ill infants and adults, particularly those on IV antibiotics or life support.
Mild gastrointestinal side effects like abdominal discomfort, bloating, flatulence, and constipation have been reported rarely. One patient reported a dry cough.
For pregnancy and lactation, Bifidobacterium longum is rated possibly safe, but we don't have lactation safety data on file for Lactobacillus acidophilus — talk with your doctor before use.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Antibiotics are the main concern — they'll kill the live bacteria in this product if taken at the same time, making the probiotics ineffective. Separate your antibiotic dose from this supplement by a few hours.
Use the medication checker on this page with your specific antibiotic name.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you have IBS, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, or certain bacterial infections, Lactobacillus acidophilus may be worth a try. If you take antibiotics, space them out from this product by several hours so the probiotics aren't killed off.
Skip this if you're seriously ill or immune-compromised without your doctor's okay. Check with your pharmacist about timing and your specific medications before you start.
