Cephalexin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Longum interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium longum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. longum.
Since B. longum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. longum preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the simple version: Cephalexin (Keflex) is an antibiotic, and antibiotics don't tell the difference between bad bacteria and the friendly bacteria in a probiotic. So if you swallow your Bifidobacterium longum at the same time as your cephalexin, the antibiotic can kill off a chunk of those live organisms before they get a chance to do their job. This doesn't make the antibiotic less effective at treating your infection, and it isn't dangerous. It mainly means you may not get your money's worth out of the probiotic.

This is a theory based on how these products work, not a strongly proven interaction. An easy fix is to space them out by at least 2 hours. If you're using the probiotic to ease antibiotic-related diarrhea, ask your pharmacist about the best timing.

What Is Cephalexin Used For?

Brand names: Keflex, Keftab, Cephalex, Lexin

Cephalexin treats bacterial infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria. It is used for respiratory tract infections, ear infections (otitis media), skin and skin structure infections, bone infections, and genitourinary tract infections — including acute prostatitis.

It works only against bacterial infections — not viruses like colds or flu. Your prescriber should use it only when a bacterial infection is confirmed or strongly suspected, to help prevent antibiotic resistance.
