Nitrofurantoin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Longum interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium longum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. longum.
Since B. longum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. longum preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the simple version: this interaction runs in one direction. Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic, and its whole job is to kill bacteria. The catch is that it can't tell the difference between the bacteria causing your urinary tract infection and the friendly Bifidobacterium longum in your probiotic. If you swallow them at the same time, the antibiotic may wipe out a good chunk of those live probiotic organisms before they ever get to work. So the worry isn't that your probiotic makes nitrofurantoin stronger or weaker, it's that the probiotic may just not do much.

This is a theoretical concern based on how the two work, not something proven to cause harm. An easy fix is spacing them out by at least 2 hours. Check with your pharmacist if you'd like help timing your doses.

About Nitrofurantoin

What Is Nitrofurantoin Used For?

Brand names: Macrodantin, Furadantin, Furatoin, Macrobid

Nitrofurantoin is used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by certain susceptible bacteria. The capsule forms (including Macrodantin) are indicated for UTIs due to susceptible strains of Escherichia coli, enterococci, Staphylococcus aureus, and certain strains of Klebsiella and Enterobacter species. Nitrofurantoin oral suspension (Furadantin) is indicated for adults and children 1 month of age and older for the same types of UTIs.

Nitrofurantoin is not used for kidney infections (pyelonephritis) or infections of the tissue around the kidney (perinephric abscesses). Because it works primarily in the urine and does not spread widely through body tissues, it may not fully clear the infection in some patients, and the UTI may return after treatment.
