HelloPharmacist Scorecard of A.Vogel Digestive Aid by Bioforce
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
A.Vogel Digestive Aid contains 7 active herbal extracts: fresh yarrow aerial parts, fresh dandelion whole plant, fresh lemon balm aerial parts, fresh gentian root, fresh blessed thistle aerial parts, angelica root, and fresh centaury aerial parts. The product also contains 57% alcohol as an inactive ingredient — this is a liquid extract formulation.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for these ingredients is limited. Lemon balm has possibly effective data for cold sores and stress-related concerns.
For the other ingredients — yarrow, dandelion, gentian, blessed thistle, angelica root, and centaury — the studies we hold show insufficient reliable evidence to rate their effectiveness for the conditions they're traditionally used for, including digestive support and wound healing.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Orally, dandelion and lemon balm are generally well tolerated, though some people report diarrhea, heartburn, or stomach upset with dandelion. Yarrow is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, but allergic reactions can occur; topically it may cause skin irritation or dermatitis.
Gentian can upset the stomach, especially at higher doses. Blessed thistle in large doses (over 5 grams per cup of tea) may cause nausea or vomiting.
This product should be avoided in pregnancy — yarrow and blessed thistle are rated likely unsafe, and dandelion, lemon balm, gentian, angelica, and centaury lack enough safety data. Breastfeeding safety is also limited for these ingredients; talk with your doctor or pharmacist before use.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your pharmacist if you take diabetes medications (dandelion may lower blood sugar), blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (dandelion may increase bleeding risk), lithium (both dandelion and yarrow may raise levels), blood pressure medications (gentian may lower pressure further), sedating drugs (lemon balm may add to drowsiness), thyroid hormone replacement (lemon balm may interfere), CYP1A2-metabolized drugs (dandelion and angelica may affect clearance), quinolone antibiotics like ciprofloxacin (dandelion may lower levels), or acid-reducing medications like H2-blockers, antacids, or PPIs (blessed thistle may reduce their effect).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This digestive herbal formula is best suited for short-term use in healthy adults without prescriptions for blood sugar, blood pressure, thyroid, or blood-thinning medications — and without lithium use. If you take any regular medications, especially for diabetes, blood pressure, thyroid function, or bleeding prevention, check your exact drugs with the tool on this page before starting.
Pregnant and breastfeeding individuals should avoid it.

A.Vogel Digestive Aid by Bioforce Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
A.Vogel Digestive Aid by Bioforce contains seven herbal extracts, several of which interact with medications.
The most serious interaction involves dandelion, which may increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when taken with diabetes medications — this is a Moderate severity concern. Dandelion also theoretically raises the risk of bleeding when combined with blood thinners (anticoagulants) or antiplatelet drugs, and may increase lithium levels through diuretic effects.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Yarrow in this product similarly carries a Moderate risk with lithium by potentially raising its levels. Lemon balm may have additive effects with sedating drugs (CNS depressants) and could interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
Gentian theoretically increases the risk of low blood pressure (hypotension) when taken with blood pressure medications — another Moderate concern.
Blessed thistle carries Minor interactions; it may reduce the effectiveness of acid-reducing medications like H2-blockers, antacids, and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) by increasing stomach acid. Angelica root may inhibit metabolism of certain drugs (CYP1A2 substrates), and centaury shows no documented interactions in our data.
Altogether, these interactions span 826 individual medications. Use the medication checker below to search your exact prescriptions before starting this product.

For each ingredient in A.Vogel Digestive Aid with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Fresh Dandelion whole plant extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, taking dandelion root along with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.
In vitro research suggests that dandelion root inhibits platelet aggregation.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, dandelion might increase the risk for hypoglycemia when used with antidiabetes drugs.
Laboratory research suggests that dandelion extract may have moderate alpha-glucosidase inhibitor activity and might also increase insulin secretion. Also, in a case report, a 58-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes who was being treated with insulin developed hypoglycemia 2 weeks after beginning to eat salads containing dandelion.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, dandelion might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Laboratory research suggests that dandelion might inhibit CYP1A2. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, until more is known, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 in patients taking dandelion.
Glucuronidated Drugs
Theoretically, dandelion might increase the clearance of drugs that are UDP-glucuronosyltransferase substrates.
There is some preliminary evidence that dandelion might induce UDP-glucuronosyltransferase, a phase II enzyme.
Lithium
Theoretically, through diuretic effects, dandelion might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
Animal research suggests that dandelion has diuretic properties. As diuretics can increase serum lithium levels, the dose of lithium might need to be decreased when taken with dandelion.
Potassium-Sparing Diuretics
Theoretically, dandelion might increase the risk of hyperkalemia when taken with potassium-sparing diuretics.
Dandelion contains significant amounts of potassium.
Quinolone Antibiotics
Theoretically, dandelion might lower fluoroquinolone levels.
Animal research shows that dandelion reduces absorption of ciprofloxacin and can lower levels by 73%. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.
Fresh Lemon Balm aerial parts extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of lemon balm might have additive effects with CNS depressant drugs.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, lemon balm might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
In vitro, constituents of lemon balm extract bind to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), preventing TSH receptor-binding and leading to the inhibition of TSH-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity. In animals, lemon balm extract has been shown to decrease levels of circulating TSH and inhibit thyroid secretion.
Angelica root extract
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
In vitro research shows that ashitaba extract inhibits cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A2. Theoretically, concomitant use of ashitaba with CYP1A2 substrates might decrease the clearance of these substrates and increase the risk for adverse effects. However, this interaction has yet to be reported in humans. Until more is known, use with caution.
Fresh Gentian root extract
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking gentian with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
In vitro research shows that gentian can cause vasodilation and lower blood pressure.
Fresh Blessed Thistle aerial parts extract
Antacids
Theoretically, blessed thistle might decrease the effectiveness of antacids.
There are reports that blessed thistle increases stomach acid.
H2-Blockers
Theoretically, blessed thistle might decrease the effectiveness of H2-blockers.
There are reports that blessed thistle increases stomach acid.
Proton Pump Inhibitors (Ppis)
Theoretically, blessed thistle might decrease the effectiveness of PPIs.
There are reports that blessed thistle increases stomach acid.
Fresh Yarrow aerial parts extract
Lithium
Theoretically, taking yarrow with lithium might increase the levels and adverse effects of lithium.
Animal research shows that yarrow has diuretic activity. Theoretically, due to these potential diuretic effects, yarrow might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium. The dose of lithium might need to be decreased.
