Here's the simple version: Mersyndol already contains two ingredients that calm the brain down. Codeine is an opioid pain reliever, and doxylamine is a sedating antihistamine (the same family as many nighttime sleep aids). Both can leave you drowsy, foggy, or slow to react. Lemon balm has its own mild calming, sleep-promoting effect, so taking them together may stack that drowsiness on top of each other.

What this looks like in real life is extra sleepiness, dizziness, slowed thinking, or feeling unsteady, which matters most if you're driving or have a few drinks. This is mostly a theoretical, additive concern from small studies, not a dangerous reaction, but it's worth running past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
