Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Hydrocodone
Hydrocodone falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Lemon Balm interacts with.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: lemon balm has a mild calming, sleepy effect of its own, and hydrocodone is a strong opioid pain reliever that already slows down your brain and breathing. Put the two together and those sedating effects can stack up. You might feel more drowsy, foggy, dizzy, or lightheaded than you'd expect from the hydrocodone alone.
This isn't a strong, well-proven warning. It's mostly theoretical, based on early animal and small human studies showing lemon balm can be relaxing, so I wouldn't panic over a cup of lemon balm tea. With concentrated supplement doses, though, the extra drowsiness matters more. Please don't change anything on your own. Just check with your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you ever feel unusually sleepy or short of breath.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Hydrocodone page
“Most people taking hydrocodone (Zohydro ER) are treating real pain, and pain wrecks sleep, so sedating supplements look tempting. They are the worst pairing on this page: 78 of the 212 interacting ingredients add to hydrocodone's sedation, which with an opioid can mean dangerously slowed breathing.”

About Lemon Balm
What is Lemon Balm?
- Anxiety and stress
- Sleep problems
- Digestive upset
- Cold sores
- Restlessness or nervousness
Lemon balm is a gentle, lemon-scented mint-family herb traditionally used to ease stress, support sleep, and calm digestion, and topically for cold sores. Early studies are promising but generally small, so the evidence is limited. It is usually well tolerated for most adults, but pregnant or breastfeeding people should check with a doctor or pharmacist first.
