Here's the thing with pairing lemon balm and Zaleplon (Sonata): both can have a calming, sleepy effect on the brain. Zaleplon already works by slowing brain activity to help you drift off, so adding lemon balm could stack on top of that. The concern is mainly an additive effect, meaning you might feel more drowsy, groggy, dizzy, or unsteady on your feet than you'd expect, especially if you get up during the night.

I'll be honest with you, this interaction is mostly theoretical and based on lower-quality studies, so it isn't a major alarm. Lemon balm doesn't change how your body breaks Zaleplon down. Still, since drowsiness is the whole point of this med, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Zaleplon Used For?

Zaleplon capsules are approved for the short-term treatment of insomnia. Specifically, they help reduce the time it takes to fall asleep (sleep onset). Clinical studies showed this benefit for up to 30 days of use.

Zaleplon has not been shown to increase total sleep time or reduce the number of times you wake up during the night. It is intended for short-term use, and if sleep problems continue beyond 7–10 days, a doctor should evaluate you for an underlying cause.
