Levothyroxine falls under THYROID HORMONE — the group Lemon Balm interacts with.

Theoretically, lemon balm might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
In vitro, constituents of lemon balm extract bind to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), preventing TSH receptor-binding and leading to the inhibition of TSH-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity. In animals, lemon balm extract has been shown to decrease levels of circulating TSH and inhibit thyroid secretion.

Here's the honest picture with lemon balm and your levothyroxine. Lab and animal research suggests that compounds in lemon balm may bump up against thyroid signaling, partly by interfering with TSH (the hormone your brain uses to tell your thyroid what to do). The theory is that lemon balm could blunt thyroid activity, which might make it harder for your replacement hormone to keep your levels steady.

I want to be clear though: this is theoretical and comes from test-tube and animal studies, not from people taking pills. So I wouldn't panic. Still, levothyroxine is a sensitive medication where small shifts can bring back fatigue, weight changes, or feeling cold. If you regularly use concentrated lemon balm supplements, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your thyroid labs. A cup of tea now and then is far less of a concern.

What Is Levothyroxine Used For?

Brand names: Euthyrox, Levothroid, Unithroid, Synthroid, Levoxyl, Levo-T, Eltroxin, Estre, Levothyroxine, Novothyrox, Levolet

Levothyroxine replaces or supplements the thyroid hormone your body isn't making enough of. It's used for hypothyroidism — an underactive thyroid — in adults, children, and even newborns, whether the cause is the thyroid gland itself, the pituitary gland, or the hypothalamus in the brain.

It's also used alongside surgery and radioiodine treatment in people with certain types of thyroid cancer, to help suppress the hormone that can stimulate cancer growth. It is not meant for weight loss, treating benign thyroid nodules in people who have enough iodine, or for hypothyroidism during recovery from a temporary condition called subacute thyroiditis.
