Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for these barbiturates (butalbital, phenobarbital, and secobarbital). They already work by calming down your central nervous system, which is exactly how they ease headaches, control seizures, or help with sleep. Lemon balm appears to gently nudge in that same direction, so taking the two together could pile the effects on top of each other.

In real-world terms, that might mean feeling extra drowsy, foggy, dizzy, or slowed down, which matters a lot if you're driving or already taking the higher-dose forms. To be fair, this is mostly theoretical and based on smaller studies, so it may not be dramatic. Still, since barbiturates are potent and dose-sensitive, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them with lemon balm.
