What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Acidophilus & Bifidus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Acidophilus & Bifidus by New Sun
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains 4 active ingredients: two species of Bifidobacterium (B. lactis and B. longum), Lactobacillus acidophilus, and a minimum count of total microorganisms — all live, active probiotics meant to support gut health. The inactive ingredients are potato starch, cellulose, cellulose powder, silica, and magnesium stearate, which help form and preserve the capsule.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for these probiotics is mixed. Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
For Bifidobacterium longum, we don't yet have enough reliable evidence to rate it for the conditions tested — which include antibiotic-associated diarrhea, hay fever, anxiety, and asthma. What works varies from person to person, so talk with your doctor if you're hoping this will address a specific health concern.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Bifidobacterium longum is also generally well tolerated in healthy people, but caution is advised if you're seriously ill or have a weakened immune system.
Both can occasionally cause mild stomach discomfort, bloating, gas, or diarrhea when you first start taking them. Rarely, in people with severe illness or recent surgery, live probiotics have been linked to infection — which is why checking with your doctor beforehand matters if you're in that situation.
For pregnancy, L. acidophilus is rated possibly safe; B. longum is also rated possibly safe for both pregnancy and breastfeeding. That said, data are limited, so ask your healthcare provider before starting while pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
The main thing to watch for is antibiotic drugs — both probiotics in this product can lose effectiveness if you take them together. Separate your doses by a few hours.
We couldn't check Bifidobacterium lactis or the total microorganism count against medications, so let your pharmacist know you're taking this product, especially if you're on any prescription.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may help if you're dealing with IBS, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, or certain infections, though the evidence is strongest for L. acidophilus. If you take antibiotics, space out your doses — don't take them at the same time.
Anyone who's seriously ill, has a weakened immune system, or is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with their doctor first.

Acidophilus & Bifidus by New Sun Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
New Sun Acidophilus & Bifidus contains two active probiotic ingredients that we could check for interactions: Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium longum.
Both carry a Moderate interaction with antibiotic drugs. Since these are live microorganisms, taking them at the same time as antibiotics might kill enough of the organisms to reduce how well the probiotic works.
The solution is straightforward — space out your doses.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Additionally, Bifidobacterium lactis and the total microorganism count couldn't be checked against drug interactions because we hold no data for them. Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.
If you take any antibiotic, let your pharmacist know you're considering this product so we can help you time the doses right. Use the medication checker below to search for your exact drugs.
