What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: agar agar powder. Agar is a thickening agent derived from seaweed that absorbs water and forms a gel in your digestive system.
The product has no other inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for agar agar's effectiveness isn't established in our data. We hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for diabetes, obesity, or neonatal jaundice.
If you're considering it for one of those purposes, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about whether the evidence supports its use for your specific situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Agar agar is generally safe as a food, but there's little safety data on supplement doses, so caution is warranted at higher amounts. The main concern is obstruction: rarely, phytobezoars (compacted fiber balls) and esophageal or bowel blockage have been reported after consuming high-fiber foods like agar, especially without enough water.
Always take agar supplements with plenty of fluid to reduce this risk, and avoid concentrated doses unless your doctor approves. Pregnancy and lactation safety data for this ingredient is not on file, so there isn't enough information to know either way.
If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, talk with your pharmacist or doctor before taking this product.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
Agar agar may reduce the absorption of oral medications (Minor severity). This spans a broad range of drugs — check your exact prescriptions with the interaction search on this page before you start.
Make sure to take this product with plenty of water to lower the risk of digestive blockage.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
Agar agar powder is a seaweed-based thickener generally well tolerated in food amounts, but supplement doses carry a Minor interaction risk with many oral medications by reducing their absorption. If you take any prescription or over-the-counter drugs, check them against the interaction tool before starting.
Always drink plenty of water with it to avoid blockage, and ask your pharmacist if this product fits your health plan.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
TerraVita Premium Collection Agar Agar Powder contains one active ingredient — agar agar — which does interact with medications.
Agar forms a thick gel in your digestive tract that can disrupt how your body absorbs both nutrients and drugs. This is a Minor severity concern, but it affects a broad range of oral medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Because agar can impair absorption across many drug types, the effect depends on which medications you take. Animal research shows that high amounts of agar (5–10% of the diet) reduce mineral absorption significantly.
The risk is real with supplement doses, especially if you don't drink enough water with it.
Additionally, consuming agar in normal food amounts appears to carry less risk than taking it as a concentrated supplement. That said, if you take any oral medications — whether for blood pressure, infections, hormones, or any other condition — check your exact prescriptions with the search tool on this page before starting this product.
Altogether, these interactions span 2,003 individual medications.

Agar Agar, Powder
Oral Drugs
Agar forms a thick gel, which may disrupt the absorption of nutrients and medications. Animal research suggests that consuming a diet consisting of 5% to 10% agar alters the absorption of nutrients from the diet. In one study, consuming a diet composed of 10% agar reduced the absorption of all evaluated minerals. Theoretically, agar may also impair the absorption of oral drugs.
