Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: green papaya fruit at 450 mg per capsule. It also includes gelatin and water as inactive ingredients to form the capsule.

Green papaya contains an enzyme called papain, which is the component responsible for most of the supplement's known biological effects and drug interactions.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Papaya product and its label doesn't state a use — see Papaya's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for green papaya supplement isn't established in the data we hold. The product claims relate to aging skin, hair loss, gallbladder cancer, colorectal cancer, and diabetes, but all are rated as having insufficient reliable evidence.

That doesn't mean the supplement does nothing—it means we don't yet have enough strong research to say either way.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Ripe papaya fruit eaten as food is well tolerated by most people. However, this is a supplement, and concentrated papaya supplements and unripe papaya are less well studied than the whole ripe fruit.

The safety notes caution against unripe (green) papaya, papaya latex, and seeds; some sources also warn against large amounts during pregnancy. Most adverse effects reported are mild—nausea and vomiting from leaf extract, and allergic reactions in sensitive people (itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing, abdominal cramps).

Severe allergic reactions are rare but possible. Papain, a compound in raw papaya, may trigger reactions especially in people with latex allergies.

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Papaya.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs; diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 92 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check with your pharmacist before taking this if you use blood sugar medications (antidiabetes drugs), amiodarone, warfarin, or levothyroxine. All four carry moderate-severity interactions with papaya.

The blood sugar effect is most clearly documented in research, while the others are based on case reports or animal data, but they're all worth verifying against your specific medications.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

This product is best for people who've checked it against their medications—especially if they take diabetes drugs, amiodarone, warfarin, or levothyroxine. The evidence for what it claims to do isn't solid, and there's limited safety data on supplement amounts.

Talk to your pharmacist before starting, particularly if you're pregnant, nursing, or taking any prescription medications.

Each ingredient & the kinds of drugs it affects

For each ingredient in Green Papaya Fruit 450 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.

Green Papaya4 drug types · 92 drugs

Amiodarone (Cordarone)

Theoretically, papaya extract may increase the levels and clinical effects of amiodarone.
Animal research in rats shows that a single oral dose of papaya extract, as well as multiple doses of papaya extract daily over 14 days, prior to a single dose of amiodarone delays the time to maximum amiodarone concentration. However, only the 14-day papaya extract regimen increases systemic amiodarone exposure by 60% to 70%. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Probable Evidence D
Antidiabetes Drugs

Concomitant use of antidiabetic drugs with fermented papaya can produce additive effects. It is unclear if other forms of papaya have the same effect.
A small low-quality clinical study in patients with type 2 diabetes who are taking glibenclamide shows that taking a fermented papaya preparation 3 grams daily for 2 months decreases fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels when compared to baseline. Additionally, of the 25 patients in the study, 9 required a reduction in glibenclamide dose.

Likelihood Probable Evidence B
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)

Theoretically, consuming large quantities of papaya fruit can reduce the clinical effects of levothyroxine.
In one case-report, a 37-year-old male with a history of thyroidectomy who was stabilized on levothyroxine for 5 years presented with hypothyroidism after consuming 5-6 papaya fruits daily for 14 days during vacation. In a controlled re-challenge test involving 5-6 papayas daily, the patient remained euthyroid for 7 days, but developed mild hypothyroidism after 14 days. Both times, thyroid levels normalized 40-45 days after discontinuing papaya.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Warfarin (Coumadin)

Theoretically, concomitant use of warfarin with papain-containing papaya extract might increase the effects and side effects of warfarin.
In one case report, a patient previously stable on warfarin was found to have an international normalization ratio (INR) of 7.4, which was attributed to ingestion of a supplement containing papain from papaya extract.

Green Papaya Fruit 450 mg by TerraVita Premium Collection: Common Questions

Does Green Papaya Fruit 450 mg by TerraVita Premium Collection interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Green Papaya Fruit 450 mg has a known interaction with 92 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Green Papaya Fruit 450 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is this safe if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
The product facts don't include specific pregnancy or breastfeeding safety information for this supplement. Safety notes caution that some sources warn against large amounts of papaya during pregnancy, and unripe papaya should be avoided. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you during pregnancy or nursing—they can discuss your individual situation.
What exactly is papain and why does it matter?
Papain is an enzyme found in papaya, especially in raw and unripe fruit. It's the compound responsible for most of papaya's biological effects and also for the interactions with medications like blood thinners and diabetes drugs. It's also the component most likely to trigger allergic reactions, particularly in people with latex allergies.
Will this help with my blood sugar?
There isn't enough reliable evidence to say whether papaya supplements help with diabetes. One small study did show that fermented papaya lowered blood sugar in people taking glibenclamide, but that's just one trial. The evidence overall is rated as insufficient, so we can't make a claim that it works for that purpose.
Can I eat papaya fruit instead of taking this supplement?
Yes, ripe papaya fruit eaten as food is generally safe and well tolerated. The safety notes say moderate amounts of ripe fruit are likely fine, but concentrated supplements and unripe papaya are less well studied. If you're thinking about either form because of a medication you take, check with your pharmacist first—the form and amount matter for interactions.
What side effects might I experience?
Most people tolerate papaya well when eaten as food. In supplement form, the most common reported side effects are nausea and vomiting from papaya leaf extract. Allergic reactions—itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing, stomach cramps, sweating, and diarrhea—can occur, especially in people allergic to latex. Severe allergic reactions are rare but possible.
Is the gelatin capsule suitable for vegetarians?
The product uses gelatin, which is derived from animal sources, so it is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans. If you follow a plant-based diet, you may want to look for a vegan-capsule alternative or eat ripe papaya fruit instead.
