Allertrex contains 12 active ingredients in a proprietary blend, delivered in a liquid form with vegetable glycerin and purified water as inactive ingredients. The formula includes peppermint (listed twice—once as peppermint and once as peppermint essential oil), organic eucalyptus, organic lungwort, organic plantain, organic orange, organic elecampane, organic lobelia, organic chaparral, lovage, organic lemon balm, and menthol.
Each plays a traditional role in respiratory and digestive wellness formulas, though the blend's exact proportions aren't disclosed on the label.

Not established
Evidence for this product's active ingredients is mixed. Peppermint is likely effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and possibly effective for indigestion (dyspepsia), nausea from chemotherapy, and reducing colon spasms during barium enema.
Lemon balm is possibly effective for cold sores, stress, and depression. For the other ingredients in Allertrex—eucalyptus, lungwort, plantain, orange, elecampane, lobelia, chaparral, and lovage—the evidence we hold either shows insufficient reliable data to rate them or, in lobelia's case, suggests it's possibly ineffective for smoking cessation.
The product as a whole is marketed for respiratory support, but that specific claim isn't covered in our effectiveness ratings.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Peppermint and peppermint oil are generally well tolerated in the doses found in supplements, though common side effects can include abdominal pain, belching, diarrhea, dry mouth, heartburn, nausea, and vomiting. In rare cases, allergic reactions including anaphylaxis have been reported.
Eucalyptus is generally well tolerated in diluted form; the undiluted oil can be toxic if swallowed and has caused seizures in some cases. Elecampane can trigger allergic contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals.
Lobelia and chaparral carry serious toxicity warnings—lobelia can cause tremors, irregular heartbeat, and at high doses coma or death, while chaparral has been linked to severe liver damage, cirrhosis, and in multiple cases, liver failure requiring transplant. Lovage may cause photosensitivity (sun sensitivity) with long-term oral use.
Lemon balm is generally well tolerated, though dizziness and sedation have been reported in rare cases.

Allertrex by Global Healing Center is a 12-ingredient liquid supplement that does interact with a number of medications.
The most serious interaction we've found is with peppermint (which appears twice in the formula as peppermint and peppermint essential oil): it may theoretically increase blood levels of drugs broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, including the blood pressure medication felodipine. Clinical research has shown this effect at a 600 mg dose of peppermint oil.

Several other ingredients affect how your liver metabolizes medications. Peppermint and eucalyptus both theoretically may increase levels of drugs processed through the CYP2C19 and CYP2C9 pathways.
Eucalyptus additionally may lower blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if you take diabetes drugs, reduce the effect of amphetamines, and reduce the effect of the sedative pentobarbital. Elecampane and lemon balm may add to the drowsiness of sedatives and other brain depressants.
Lovage may interfere with diuretics (water pills), and lobelia may theoretically raise lithium levels. Chaparral theoretically increases risk to the liver when taken with drugs that damage the liver.
We could not check menthol, organic plantain, and organic orange—no interaction data was on file for these. Lungwort was checked and has no interactions documented in our data.

organic Eucalyptus
Amphetamines
Theoretically, inhaling eucalyptol may reduce the effectiveness of amphetamines.
Animal research suggests that inhaling eucalyptol may reduce the levels of amphetamines in the blood.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, eucalyptus leaf might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Animal research suggests that eucalyptus leaf might have hypoglycemic activity, and might have additive effects when used with antidiabetes drugs.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, eucalyptus might increase the levels of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that eucalyptus oil might inhibit CYP1A2, although this has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates
Theoretically, eucalyptus might increase the levels of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that eucalyptus oil might inhibit CYP2C19, although this has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, eucalyptus might increase the levels of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that eucalyptus oil might inhibit CYP2C9, although this has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, eucalyptus might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that eucalyptus oil might inhibit CYP3A4, although this has not been reported in humans.
Pentobarbital (Nembutal)
Theoretically, inhaling eucalyptol might reduce the effectiveness of pentobarbital.
Animal research suggests that inhaling eucalyptol reduces the level of pentobarbital that reaches the brain.
Peppermint
Cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune)
Theoretically, peppermint oil might increase the levels and adverse effects of cyclosporine.
In animal research, peppermint oil inhibits cyclosporine metabolism and increases cyclosporine levels. Inhibition of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) may be partially responsible for this interaction. An interaction between peppermint oil and cyclosporine has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates
Theoretically, peppermint might increase the levels of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro research shows that peppermint oil inhibits CYP2C19. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, peppermint might increase the levels of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that peppermint oil inhibits CYP2C9. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, peppermint might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that a single dose of peppermint oil 600 mg inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes and increases the AUC of felodipine, a CYP3A4 substrate. However, in vitro research suggests that peppermint oil only inhibits CYP3A4 at very high concentrations.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, peppermint might increase the levels of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro and animal research shows that peppermint oil and peppermint leaf inhibit CYP1A2. However, in clinical research, peppermint tea did not significantly affect the metabolism of caffeine, a CYP1A2 substrate. It is possible that the 6-day duration of treatment may have been too short to identify a difference.

Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, chaparral might have additive adverse effects on the liver when used with hepatotoxic drugs.
organic Lemon Balm
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of lemon balm might have additive effects with CNS depressant drugs.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, lemon balm might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
In vitro, constituents of lemon balm extract bind to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), preventing TSH receptor-binding and leading to the inhibition of TSH-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity. In animals, lemon balm extract has been shown to decrease levels of circulating TSH and inhibit thyroid secretion.
organic Elecampane
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, elecampane may cause additive sedative effects when taken with CNS depressants.
Elecampane might have sedative effects.
Lovage
Diuretic Drugs
Theoretically, lovage root might interfere with diuretic therapy due to its aquaretic effects.
Some diuretics include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril, Microzide), and others.
organic Lobelia
Lithium
Lobelia is thought to have diuretic properties. Theoretically, due to these potential diuretic effects, lobelia might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium. The dose of lithium might need to be decreased.
