American Ginseng Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking American Ginseng against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: certified organic American Ginseng in liquid form. The liquid is made with grain alcohol and deionized water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
American ginseng is possibly effective for upper respiratory tract infections — colds and similar infections affecting your nose, throat, and upper airways. The evidence for anemia of chronic disease (a form of anemia linked to long-term illness) and breast cancer is not established in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
American ginseng is generally well tolerated in the short term for healthy adults, though quality and dosing vary between products and long-term safety hasn't been well studied. Headache has been reported with use.
The safety data advises against taking American ginseng during pregnancy and while breastfeeding — there isn't enough information to say it's safe in either situation.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Before you take this product, double-check with your pharmacist if you're on warfarin or other blood thinners, immunosuppressants, diabetes medications, or MAOIs (older antidepressants). American ginseng can reduce how well these drugs work or raise the risk of side effects.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
American ginseng may help with cold symptoms if the evidence holds up for you. If you take warfarin, immunosuppressants, diabetes medications, or an older antidepressant (MAOI), check with your pharmacist before starting — this product can interfere with how those drugs work.
Skip it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

American Ginseng by L.A. Naturals Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L.A.
Naturals American Ginseng is a single-ingredient product that does interact with several medication types. The most serious concern is with warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner — American ginseng appears to reduce how well warfarin works, which could allow blood clots to form when they shouldn't.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
You'll also want to check if you take immunosuppressants (drugs that calm down your immune system after transplants or for autoimmune diseases). American ginseng seems to rev up immune activity, which might work against those medications.
Similarly, if you're on antidiabetes drugs for blood sugar control, American ginseng may lower your blood sugar further — raising the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). There's also a theoretical concern with MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors), older antidepressants, where case reports have noted insomnia, headache, tremors, and mood changes.
Altogether, these interactions span 212 individual medications. Use the search tool below to check your exact prescriptions before you start.
