What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: American ginseng root. The inactive ingredients are vegetable cellulose and vegetable-derived magnesium stearate, which are the capsule material and a flow agent.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
American ginseng is possibly effective for upper respiratory tract infections (the common cold and similar illnesses). For anemia of chronic disease and breast cancer, the evidence isn't strong enough to rate—we just don't have reliable data yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
American ginseng is generally well tolerated in the short term for healthy adults, though quality and dosing vary widely between products, and long-term safety hasn't been well studied. Headache has been reported by some users.
During pregnancy, there isn't enough safety data and some lab research raises concern, so the safer choice is to avoid it. While breastfeeding, too little is known about safety, so avoidance is recommended.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Check these medication types before starting: warfarin or other blood thinners (Major interaction), immunosuppressants, diabetes drugs, and MAOIs. Don't start this product without talking to your pharmacist if you're on any of these.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
American ginseng may help with colds and upper respiratory infections. If you take warfarin, immunosuppressants, diabetes drugs, or MAOIs, talk to your pharmacist before starting—this one needs a careful check.
For short-term use in healthy adults without those medications, it's generally well tolerated, but run your exact medications through the checker first.

American Ginseng Root by Nature's Answer Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
American Ginseng Root by Nature's Answer does interact with several medication types, and the most serious concern is with blood thinners.
If you take warfarin (Coumadin), American ginseng can significantly reduce how well it works by lowering your INR—the blood test that tells us your blood is thin enough. This is a Major interaction and needs to be avoided or very carefully monitored by your doctor.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
There are also Moderate interactions to watch for. American ginseng stimulates immune function, which can interfere with immunosuppressant drugs used after transplant or for certain autoimmune conditions.
It may also lower blood sugar, so if you're on diabetes medications, there's a risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Additionally, there's a theoretical concern with MAOIs (a type of antidepressant)—a few case reports describe insomnia, headache, tremors, and mood changes when ginseng was used with these drugs.
Altogether, these interactions span 212 individual medications. If you're on any prescription medication, run it through the checker below before you start this supplement.
