Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
AMPK Booster has 3 active ingredients. European barberry extract and jiaogulan are plant extracts used to support cellular energy metabolism.
Fisetin is a polyphenol compound with a similar role, though we don't hold detailed monograph data on it. The capsule also contains acacia gum and white rice flour as inactive ingredients to form and fill the capsule.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
European barberry and jiaogulan have been studied for several health areas, but the evidence we have is limited. Jiaogulan is rated possibly effective for diabetes — meaning some clinical research supports a blood-sugar-lowering effect — though more study is needed.
For European barberry, the evidence on acne, bacterial vaginosis, breast cancer, dental plaque, and diabetes is insufficient to draw firm conclusions. We hold no effectiveness data for fisetin.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Both European barberry and jiaogulan are generally well tolerated in short-term use, but long-term safety isn't well studied. Common side effects from jiaogulan include diarrhea, nausea, dry mouth, dizziness, and insomnia.
European barberry is rare but serious: one case linked it to liver injury and a blood disorder after just 2 weeks of use, though this is not common. During pregnancy, European barberry is likely unsafe (berberine can cross the placenta and has raised safety concerns in newborns), and jiaogulan is possibly unsafe.
Both should be avoided while breastfeeding — European barberry may pass into milk and harm an infant, and jiaogulan's lactation safety isn't established.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check whether you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin or aspirin) — AMPK Booster may increase bleeding risk. Also double-check if you take diabetes medications, blood pressure drugs, immunosuppressants, or medications processed by your liver's CYP3A4 enzyme.
All are Moderate-severity interactions documented for the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you take blood thinners, diabetes drugs, blood pressure medication, or any drug your liver processes through CYP3A4, talk to your pharmacist before starting this product — the interactions are real and could change how your medications work. Pregnant and breastfeeding individuals should avoid it.
Short-term use appears tolerable for others, but long-term safety data is sparse.

AMPK Booster by SuperSmart Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
AMPK Booster by SuperSmart contains two ingredients with documented interactions.
The most serious concern involves European barberry extract, which can theoretically add to the effects of sedating drugs (a Moderate interaction) — meaning you could feel drowsier or more relaxed than expected. It may also lower blood pressure more than intended if you're on blood pressure medication, and could raise bleeding risk if you take blood thinners (anticoagulants) or antiplatelet drugs like aspirin.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
European barberry also interacts with several other drug types: it may increase levels of certain medications your body processes through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, raise the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if you take diabetes drugs, affect how anticholinergic and cholinergic drugs work, and theoretically change how cyclosporine (an immunosuppressant) behaves in your body. All of these are Moderate-severity interactions.
Jiaogulan, the second active ingredient, carries Moderate interactions with blood thinners (similar bleeding risk), immune-suppressing drugs, and diabetes medications (same low blood sugar risk). We could not check fisetin — no interaction data is on file for it.
Altogether, these interactions span 1,284 individual medications. Run your exact prescriptions through the checker on this page before you start.

Berberis vulgaris Extract
Anticholinergic Drugs
Theoretically, taking European barberry with anticholinergic drugs might cause additive effects.
In vitro evidence suggests that European barberry might have anticholinergic properties.
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, European barberry may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro and animal evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, might inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, European barberry might have a similar effect.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking European barberry with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Preliminary clinical evidence suggests that European barberry juice reduces fasting glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes who are also taking antidiabetes drugs. Additionally, some animal studies show that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, has antiglycemic potential. Monitor blood glucose levels closely.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking European barberry with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal and human research suggests that European barberry extracts can have hypotensive effects.
Cholinergic Drugs
Theoretically, taking European barberry with cholinergic drugs might decrease the effects of cholinergic drugs.
In vitro evidence suggests that European barberry might have anticholinergic properties.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use with drugs that have sedative properties may cause additive effects.
Animal research suggests that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, might have sedative effects. Theoretically, European barberry might have a similar effect.
Cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune)
Theoretically, concomitant use with cyclosporine may cause additive effects.
Berberine, a constituent of European barberry, can reduce the metabolism and increase serum levels of cyclosporine. This effect is attributed to the ability of berberine to inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4), which metabolizes cyclosporine. Theoretically, European barberry might have a similar effect.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, European barberry might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
There is very preliminary evidence suggesting that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, might inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. Theoretically, European barberry might have a similar effect.
Gynostemma pentaphyllum Extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, jiaogulan might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro research suggests that jiaogulan has antiplatelet effects.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, jiaogulan might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Clinical research shows that jiaogulan can lower blood glucose levels.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, jiaogulan might decrease the effectiveness of immunosuppressive therapy.
Clinical and animal studies suggest that jiaogulan can stimulate the immune system.
