What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient, chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa), in a 20:1 concentrated extract powder. Chokeberry is the dark berry the extract is made from, and it is the source of the compounds studied in the research we hold.
No inactive ingredients are listed in our data for this product.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
For cardiovascular disease, the evidence rates chokeberry as possibly ineffective. For age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration, athletic performance, and cancer, the reliable evidence is insufficient to rate it either way.
In other words, we don't have solid proof it works for any of these purposes.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chokeberry is generally well tolerated as a food, but the safety of supplement amounts is not well studied. One safety note specifically advises avoiding concentrated supplements because they have not been studied, so talk through this form with your own doctor or pharmacist.
In small clinical studies, common side effects of chokeberry juice included constipation, diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps, and vomiting. One study reported these in a small share of participants, while another, using a larger daily dose, reported them in about half.
For pregnancy, our data has no entry for this product. For breastfeeding, the entry is present but contains no usable rating, so there isn't enough data to know either way.
Please talk with your doctor or pharmacist for advice that fits your situation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Double-check these medication types before taking this product, since all are rated Moderate: blood thinners (anticoagulants) and antiplatelet drugs, antidiabetes drugs, drugs cleared by the liver enzyme CYP3A4, and the cancer drug trabectedin (Yondelis). Use the search tool on this page to check your exact medications, and confirm with your own doctor or pharmacist before combining them.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may be of interest to adults who want to learn about chokeberry, with the understanding that the evidence for its purposes is limited. If you take blood thinners, antiplatelet drugs, diabetes medications, or any drug cleared by CYP3A4, you should be careful and review the combination closely.
Talk it over with your own doctor or pharmacist before you start, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a procedure.

Aronia melanocarpa monograph & interactionsAronia 20:1 Concentrated Extract by Samsara Herbs Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Aronia 20:1 Concentrated Extract from Samsara Herbs has documented interactions with medications, all coming from its only active ingredient, chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa).
The most serious rating we hold is Moderate, and it applies to blood thinners (anticoagulants) and antiplatelet drugs. Chokeberry might increase the risk of bleeding with these, and research suggests it can temporarily slow the platelet clumping that starts clots.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chokeberry may also raise levels of drugs cleared by the liver enzyme CYP3A4, which is a Moderate interaction. Lab research shows it inhibits this enzyme, and one case report links it to muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) with the cancer drug trabectedin (Yondelis).
Antidiabetes drugs are also rated Moderate, because chokeberry might increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), though clinical findings on its effect on blood glucose are mixed.
Altogether, these interactions span 814 individual medications. Every ingredient in this product has documented interactions, so there is no interaction-free ingredient to note.

For each ingredient in Aronia 20:1 Concentrated Extract with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Aronia melanocarpa
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, chokeberry might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Clinical and in vitro research suggests that chokeberry extract can temporarily inhibit platelet aggregation and decrease clot formation.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chokeberry might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Some clinical research shows that chokeberry decreases levels of blood glucose in some patients with diabetes. However, other clinical research suggests that chokeberry has no significant effect on blood glucose levels.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, chokeberry might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that chokeberry inhibits CYP3A4. In humans, there is one case report of a drug interaction with trabectedin, a CYP3A4 substrate, which is hypothesized to have been caused by chokeberry inhibition of CYP3A4.
Trabectedin (Yondelis)
Theoretically, chokeberry might increase the effects and adverse effects of trabectedin.
In one case report, a patient drinking chokeberry juice developed rhabdomyolysis induced by trabectedin, a cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) substrate. It is possible that inhibition of CYP3A4 by chokeberry juice might have inhibited the metabolism of trabectedin and increased trabectedin levels in this patient.
