What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: astaxanthin 10 mg per softgel. Astaxanthin is a carotenoid — a pigment found naturally in algae and seafood that gives them their pink or red color.
The softgel also includes inactive ingredients: sunflower seed oil, gelatin, and glycerin, which help deliver the astaxanthin in a form your body can absorb.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for astaxanthin is insufficient to rate across the uses studied — age-related cognitive decline, macular degeneration (AMD), aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, and carpal tunnel syndrome. We don't have reliable data showing it works for any of these.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the science hasn't established it yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects in trials were mild: abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stool (the red color is just the pigment passing through).
At higher doses — 40 mg daily — a small number of people reported severe stomach pain. The safety data advises against using astaxanthin during pregnancy and while breastfeeding because there isn't enough information to know it's safe in those situations.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you use drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 enzymes — a list that includes hundreds of medications. This includes many heart and blood pressure drugs, cholesterol lowerers, immunosuppressants, and others.
Astaxanthin may lower their blood levels in theory, though this hasn't been confirmed in people. Your own provider can review your specific medications and advise whether it's okay to combine them.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Astaxanthin is a carotenoid supplement with limited evidence for the conditions it's marketed for. If you're interested in it for anti-aging or cognitive reasons, know that we don't have proof it works yet.
Because it may affect how your liver breaks down many medications, check with your doctor or pharmacist before you start — especially if you take heart, blood pressure, cholesterol, or seizure medication. It's generally well tolerated, but long-term safety isn't established.

Astaxanthin 10 mg by Puritan's Pride Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Astaxanthin 10 mg by Puritan's Pride interacts with a significant number of medications through its effects on two liver enzymes that break down drugs.
The most serious concern is with drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 substrates — astaxanthin may lower their blood levels, potentially reducing how well they work. This effect has been shown in laboratory studies of human liver cells but hasn't been confirmed in people yet.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Astaxanthin also affects drugs broken down by the CYP2B6 enzyme in a similar way — it may decrease their levels. Again, this is theoretically possible based on lab work but hasn't been reported in actual patients.
Altogether, these interactions span 672 individual medications. Because the liver-enzyme effects haven't been proven in humans, the practical risk isn't clear — but if you take any prescription medication, especially ones for heart rhythm, blood pressure, cholesterol, or seizures, run it through the interaction checker below before you start astaxanthin.
