Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects reported orally are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools.
In trials, a 6 mg dose caused increased bowel movements and red stools in a small number of participants; a much higher 40 mg dose caused severe stomach pain in two patients.
