Aliskiren falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Astaxanthin interacts with.

Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces CYP3A4 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for aliskiren (Tekturna), your blood pressure medication. Some lab work in human liver cells suggests astaxanthin might speed up an enzyme called CYP3A4, which helps clear certain drugs from your body. Aliskiren is partly handled by that enzyme, and it is an active drug already (not a prodrug that needs switching on). So in theory, if astaxanthin revs up that enzyme, your body could clear aliskiren a bit faster, leaving slightly less in your system and possibly making it work a touch less well for your blood pressure.

The big thing to keep in mind: this is only a theoretical, lab-based idea, and it has never actually been seen in people. I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, if you'd like to add astaxanthin, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor, and keeping an eye on your home blood pressure readings is a smart, easy safeguard.

Aliskiren and Tekturna tablets are both approved to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and in children who are at least 6 years old and weigh 50 kg (about 110 lbs) or more. Lowering high blood pressure reduces the risk of serious events like strokes and heart attacks.
