What’s inside
Full disclosure
This supplement contains one active ingredient: AstaReal Astaxanthin at 12 mg per softgel. Astaxanthin is a carotenoid pigment, a type of naturally occurring compound with antioxidant properties.
The softgel also contains inactive ingredients — extra virgin olive oil, gelatin, glycerin, purified water, and mixed tocopherols — that help deliver and preserve the active ingredient.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold on astaxanthin doesn't establish that it works for any condition. Claims about age-related cognitive decline, macular degeneration (a type of vision loss), aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, and carpal tunnel syndrome all carry insufficient reliable evidence to rate.
That means the research to date isn't solid enough to call it effective for these purposes. If you're considering this for a specific health goal, ask your doctor whether the science supports it for you.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects reported are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools — the latter is just the color of the pigment and not harmful.
A small number of people taking 6 mg daily experienced increased bowel movements or red stools, and two people taking a much higher dose (40 mg) reported severe stomach pain. The safety data advise against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding because there isn't enough information to know whether it's safe.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you if you're pregnant, nursing, or planning to become pregnant.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Astaxanthin 12 mg, double-check any medications metabolized by CYP3A4 (a very common liver pathway used by hundreds of drugs, including some heart, immune, and cholesterol medications) and CYP2B6 — astaxanthin may lower their levels. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to run your exact prescriptions through an interaction checker.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Astaxanthin 12 mg is an antioxidant supplement with unproven effectiveness for the conditions commonly claimed. The main caution is a theoretical interaction with many medications processed through liver enzymes — this hasn't been seen in humans yet, but it's worth checking your prescriptions first.
If you take any regular medications, review them with the tool on this page or ask your pharmacist or doctor before starting.

Formula
Astaxanthin is a naturally occurring carotenoid that, due to its unique structure, performs an important role in cellular free radical protection. Astaxanthin is one of nature's most powerful antioxidants. Wild salmon, krill and shrimp derive their pink color from a diet rich in microalgae - a critical source of astaxanthin. Nature's Lab uses AstaReal Astaxanthin, one of the most studied brands as astaxanthin in the world. It is non-GMO, haematococcus pluvial micro algae and is framed in the U.S.A. to ensure both quality and stability.

Astaxanthin 12 mg by Nature's Lab Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Astaxanthin 12 mg by Nature's Lab has documented interactions with medications.
The main concern is with drugs processed by your liver's CYP3A4 enzyme — a very common pathway. Astaxanthin may speed up how your body breaks down these medications, potentially lowering their levels and making them less effective.
This is based on lab research and hasn't been seen in actual patients yet, but it's still worth checking.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Astaxanthin also theoretically affects drugs metabolized by CYP2B6, another liver enzyme, through the same mechanism. Again, this is lab-based evidence without confirmed human cases.
Both interactions carry a Moderate severity rating. Altogether, these interactions span 672 individual medications.
Because many common drugs use these pathways — including some heart medications, immunosuppressants, and cholesterol drugs — you'll want to run your exact prescriptions through the medication checker below before you start.
