What’s inside
Full disclosure
Nutricost Astaxanthin 12 mg is a single-ingredient softgel containing 12 mg of natural astaxanthin per capsule. Astaxanthin is a carotenoid pigment (a type of plant compound) with antioxidant properties.
The softgel also contains inactive ingredients—sunflower oil, gelatin, glycerin, and purified water—to deliver the astaxanthin.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold on astaxanthin doesn't support a confident claim for any of the uses it's marketed for. Age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, and carpal tunnel syndrome all show insufficient reliable evidence to rate.
That means the research either isn't there yet or isn't strong enough to say whether astaxanthin actually helps with these conditions.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects reported orally are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stool.
A small number of trial participants on lower doses experienced increased bowel movements and red stool color; at much higher doses (40 mg daily), severe stomach pain has been reported in isolated cases. There isn't enough safety data to recommend astaxanthin during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
If you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this supplement.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this supplement, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any drugs metabolized through your liver's CYP3A4 enzyme system (Moderate severity concern) or CYP2B6 enzyme system (Moderate severity concern). Astaxanthin may theoretically lower the levels of these medications based on lab findings, though this hasn't been confirmed in humans.
Your pharmacist can tell you whether any of your current medications fall into these categories.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Nutricost Astaxanthin 12 mg is a straightforward single-ingredient supplement that's generally well tolerated, though long-term safety data are limited and its effectiveness for the conditions it's promoted for isn't established in our data. The main caution is potential interactions with medications your liver processes through the CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 enzyme systems—these are theoretical based on lab work, not yet proven in humans, but worth discussing with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any prescriptions.
Check your medications and talk it over with your own healthcare provider before you start.

Astaxanthin 12 mg by Nutricost Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Nutricost Astaxanthin 12 mg contains a single active ingredient—astaxanthin—that theoretically may interact with certain medications.
The most serious documented concern involves drugs processed through your liver's CYP3A4 enzyme system (a Moderate severity interaction). Astaxanthin appears to speed up how your body clears these medications, which could lower their levels and reduce how well they work.
This is based on lab findings, not confirmed human studies yet.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Astaxanthin also theoretically affects drugs metabolized by the CYP2B6 enzyme system (also Moderate severity) in the same way—it may decrease their blood levels. Again, this comes from test-tube research and hasn't been seen in real patients.
Because these effects haven't been proven in humans, their true clinical importance isn't clear. Even so, if you take any prescription or over-the-counter medications metabolized by either of these enzyme systems—including many statins, some blood pressure drugs, and others—it's worth checking your specific medications with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this supplement.
