Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Astaxanthin Algae Powder contains one active ingredient: astaxanthin, a red pigment from algae. There are no other inactive ingredients listed.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Astaxanthin product and its label doesn't state a use — see Astaxanthin's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for astaxanthin isn't established yet in the data we hold. The product makes claims related to age-related cognitive decline, macular degeneration, aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, and carpal tunnel syndrome—but for all of these, the scientific evidence is rated as insufficient to draw a reliable conclusion.

That doesn't mean astaxanthin doesn't work; it means larger or better-designed studies are needed to know.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stool—the latter is harmless (it's just the pigment coming through).

At typical doses (6 mg daily), a small number of trial participants reported increased bowel movements and red stool; at much higher doses (40 mg daily), a couple of people experienced severe stomach pain. There isn't enough safety data to know whether astaxanthin is safe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

If you're pregnant or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Astaxanthin.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 672 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before you take this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on any medications metabolized by the liver enzymes CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 (Moderate severity for both). Astaxanthin may theoretically speed up how your body breaks down these drugs, though this hasn't been confirmed in humans yet.

Astaxanthin Algae Powder by TerraVita Premium Collection: Common Questions

Does Astaxanthin Algae Powder by TerraVita Premium Collection interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Astaxanthin Algae Powder has a known interaction with 671 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Astaxanthin Algae Powder contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What's astaxanthin, and where does it come from?
Astaxanthin is a red pigment naturally produced by algae. It's the ingredient that gives salmon and some other seafood their pink color, and in this product it comes from algae powder.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
There isn't enough safety data to know either way. The facts advise against it during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you in these situations.
What side effects might I notice?
Most people tolerate it well. The most common side effects are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stool—the stool color is harmless and just the pigment passing through. At very high doses, severe stomach pain has been reported in a small number of people.
Does this product actually work for aging skin or cognitive decline?
The scientific evidence isn't strong enough yet to say for sure. All the health claims made for astaxanthin—including for skin, memory, and eye health—fall under "insufficient evidence" in the data we hold, which means we need better studies to know if it works.
Is it safe to take with my other medications?
Astaxanthin interacts with a large number of medications, especially those broken down by the liver. Check your exact prescriptions with the search tool on this page, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
