Astragalus Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Astragalus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: dried astragalus root extract. Astragalus is an herb traditionally used to support immune and energy function.
The liquid also includes distilled water and ethyl alcohol as inactive ingredients (the alcohol serves as a preservative and extraction solvent in liquid herbal formulas).
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence on astragalus for specific health purposes is not established in the data we hold. Effectiveness ratings for conditions such as hay fever, absent menstruation, aplastic anemia, angina, asthma, and beta-thalassemia are all marked as insufficient reliable evidence to rate — meaning there isn't enough solid research to say whether it works for these uses or not.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astragalus is generally well tolerated in the short term by healthy adults, though quality human safety data is limited. Side effects reported in some trials include dizziness, and in one case, a temporary chest pain condition (lacunar angina), though it's unclear whether astragalus actually caused these.
Rapid intravenous doses have caused temporary heart palpitations and rash. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding because there isn't enough reliable information to know it's safe in those situations.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take immunosuppressants, lithium, cyclophosphamide, or antidiabetes drugs — all are rated Moderate severity interactions with astragalus.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're in good health and not on any of the medications listed above, astragalus may be worth trying — though the evidence for specific conditions is thin. If you take an immunosuppressant, lithium, cyclophosphamide, diabetes medication, or any other prescription drug, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, because this product could interfere.
Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Astragalus by Herbalist & Alchemist Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Astragalus by Herbalist & Alchemist is a single-ingredient liquid extract that does interact with a number of medications.
The most serious concern is immunosuppressants — astragalus appears to stimulate immune function, which could theoretically reduce how well these drugs work. This is rated Moderate severity.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Beyond that, astragalus interacts with lithium (a mood stabilizer), cyclophosphamide (a chemotherapy drug), and antidiabetes medications. With lithium, astragalus's diuretic properties might reduce how much lithium your body clears, raising its levels and side effects.
With cyclophosphamide, the evidence is mixed — some animal work suggests astragalus might undo the drug's immune-dampening effects, but other animal studies show no effect. With antidiabetes drugs, astragalus itself may lower blood sugar, raising your risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if you combine them.
Altogether, these interactions span 208 individual medications. Before you start this product, use the search tool below to check whether any of your current prescriptions fall into these categories — especially if you take an immunosuppressant, lithium, cyclophosphamide, or a diabetes medication.

Cyclophosphamide
Theoretically, astragalus might interfere with cyclophosphamide therapy.
Evidence regarding the effect of astragalus on immunosuppression caused by cyclophosphamide is conflicting. Some animal research suggests that astragalus reverses cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppression. However, other animal research shows no effect.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, astragalus might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Astragalus seems to stimulate immune function. Theoretically, taking astragalus might decrease the effects of immunosuppressive therapy.
Lithium
Theoretically, astragalus might increase levels and adverse effects of lithium.
Animal research suggests that astragalus has diuretic properties. Theoretically, due to this diuretic effect, astragalus might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
