Beta-alanine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults, but it commonly causes a harmless tingling sensation (paresthesias) in the skin, especially on the scalp, that usually starts within 20 minutes and lasts about an hour. The intensity depends on dose — at higher doses the tingling feels stronger, at lower doses it's mild or doesn't happen at all.

Long-term safety at high doses hasn't been studied enough to know. There isn't enough safety information during pregnancy, so the data advises against it.

The same goes for breastfeeding — there's not enough information to know whether it's safe, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it.
